We Said No! No!: A Story of Civil Disobedience (repeat)
After the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, the United States declared war on Japan. In March of 1942 the U.S. government decided the Japanese Americans and Japanese immigrants living on the West Coast could be spies or saboteurs. Martial Law was declared and 120,000 people were forcibly removed from their homes, forced to liquidate their businesses and told to report to so-called relocation camps. The U.S. government called this "evacuation". After the Japanese Americans and immigrants had been incarcerated at the "internment" camps for a year, the U.S. government decided to seek out volunteers who would now fight for America. Under the insignia of the Selective Service, military personnel visited the ten internment camps and had every man and woman over 18 years of age fill out what has come to be known as the "Loyalty Questionnaire". This questionnaire was to determine if you were loyal to America and would fight against any enemy of the United States. If you answered "no" to any of the loaded questions, you were not considered a loyal American; thus, you were sent to the camp for the disloyal - Tule Lake Segregation Camp. This film is about those Americans deemed disloyal, who fought for their civil rights in a country that had abandoned them. (Additional airings: 5/12 1:00 AM, 5/12 9:00 AM, 5/17 3:00 AM)

Nature – Attenborough's Wonder of Song (repeat)
David Attenborough presents seven of the most remarkable animal songs found in nature and explores the significance of these songs in the lives of their species. Each one - from the song of the largest lemur to the song of the humpback whale to the song of the lyrebird - was recorded in his lifetime. But will they soon be heard no more? Contrary to Charles Darwin's theory of sexual selection, a new generation of scientists have discovered that animal song is not just the preserve of males. Females sing too. But there are also fears that we do not have much longer to hear them. Because as humankind gets noisier, the rest of the planet is falling silent. Joyous, surprising and poignant, this story of pioneering research and astounding insight is a chorus of wonder and a wake-up call. (Additional airings: 5/25 12:00 AM, 5/25 8:00 AM)

American Experience – Victory in the Pacific
Take no prisoners. Fight to the bitter end." Those were everyday words to combat troops on both sides at the end of World War II in the Pacific. And they led to an unprecedented orgy of slaughter. In this provocative, thorough examination of the final months of the war, this film looks at the escalation of bloodletting from the vantage point of both the Japanese and the Americans. As the film will show, most of the Emperor's inner circle was determined to continue the war even after losses in the Philippines in February 1945 cut off Japan's supply lines. And though he was warned that the country, brought to its knees by the conflict, might erupt in a Communist revolution, Emperor Hirohito believed that one last decisive battle could reverse Japan's fortunes. The Americans, for their part, were startled by the intensity and determination of the Japanese defenders in the South Pacific. From the U.S. capture of the Mariana Islands, through the firebombing of Tokyo and the dropping of the atomic bomb, this program chronicles the dreadful and unprecedented loss of life and the decisions made by leaders on both sides that finally ended the war. Grandma Stand
At a time when the lack of connection is epidemic, wise and witty grandmothers sit behind a lemonade-style stand in NYC's Central Park, offering heartfelt life lessons to passersby. Inspired by the importance of his own grandmother's guidance, Mike Matthews created the "Grandma Stand" as a place where anyone can find emotional comfort through conversations with an impartial grandma. It has become so popular that "Grandma Stands" are now opening in other states and countries. The hour-long documentary GRANDMA STAND, from two-time Christopher Award winner Susan Polis Schutz, captures the stand in action, offering viewers the opportunity to witness 20 diverse individuals, ranging in age from 10 to 81, candidly and vulnerably share their feelings with a grandmother. "I have a problem with boundaries," said a recent college graduate. "I am anxious about my future," shares another. "I have too much free time on my hands," admits a recently retired lawyer. "I am afraid to cry," reveals a young man whose beloved dog had just died. The program reveals how a brief encounter with someone can have a profound impact. Red Storm Rising: The Struggle for the American
RED STORM RISING: THE STRUGGLE FOR THE AMERICAN COMMUNIST PARTY chronicles the complex history of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA), from its formation in the early 20th century through its rise, influence and eventual decline. Though never a major political force, the CPUSA played a role in American politics, the labor movement and the cultural life of many workers. Under the leadership of Earl Browder (1932-1945) and William Z. Foster (1945-1957), the Communists attempted to build a mass radical movement, and in the process achieved respectability previously unknown and now frequently forgotten. Despite their close collaboration, Browder and Foster eventually became each other's nemesis as they struggled to address the challenges presented by the Industrial Revolution. Their relationship reveals how inner squabbling in a political movement can affect its influence and ultimate success. More broadly, RED STORM RISING explores the ideals, struggles and contradictions of a movement that challenged the status quo and left a lasting, if often overlooked, mark on U.S. politics.
